Students of Koturkul'sk School, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Students of Koturkul'sk School, 1909. This image is from Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Students of Koturkul'sk School" by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev, offers a glimpse into the educational landscape of Siberian Cossack life in 1909. The image is part of the "Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home" album, showcasing various aspects of the Cossacks' territories, culture, and daily life. The photograph was taken during Katanaev's journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai, which later became the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk. The image was captured for the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition held in Omsk in 1911. The photograph features a group of young Cossack students, dressed in traditional attire, seated at desks in a classroom setting. The students appear engaged in their studies, with some holding textbooks and others looking intently at their teachers or classmates. The classroom itself is sparsely furnished, with a wooden chalkboard and a few windows allowing natural light to filter in. The photograph is a testament to the importance of education in the Cossack community, even in the remote and challenging conditions of the Siberian steppe. It also underscores the rich cultural heritage and resilience of the Cossacks, who played a significant role in the history and development of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. This photograph is a valuable historical document, providing insight into the educational system and daily life of the Cossacks during a pivotal period in Russian history. Katanaev's meticulous composition and attention to detail bring the students' stories to life, making this image a captivating and enduring piece of history.
