EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic landing of the Space Shuttle Atlantis on May 24,1997, at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA. Framed by the iconic Vehicle Assembly Building and the Mate-Demate Device in the distance, Atlantis gracefully touches down on Runway 33 with its drag chute deployed. The momentous conclusion of the STS-84 mission is beautifully frozen in time. As we admire this remarkable image, we witness Astronaut Kenneth D. Cockrell piloting the Shuttle Training Aircraft alongside Atlantis. This symbolic representation showcases his role as acting deputy chief of the Astronaut Office and adds an extra layer of significance to this already awe-inspiring scene. STS-84 marked a significant milestone as it was one of nine planned dockings between a Space Shuttle and Russia's Mir Space Station. During its five-day stay at Mir, Atlantis facilitated crew exchange and transferred over 7,300 pounds of water, logistics, science experiments, and hardware. The photograph not only captures a pivotal moment in space exploration but also highlights America's dedication to aviation advancements during that decade. It serves as a reminder of our country's commitment to pushing boundaries and venturing into uncharted territories. Preserved by NASA and now presented through Heritage Images' lens, this print allows us to relive an extraordinary chapter in human history where dreams took flight beyond Earth's atmosphere.
