Statue of the Late Mr. Joseph Brotherton, erected in Peel Park, Manchester, 1858. Creator: Walmsly
Statue of the Late Mr. Joseph Brotherton, erected in Peel Park, Manchester, 1858. British politician, Nonconformist minister and pioneering vegetarian. The statue is of bronze, by Mr. M. Noble...Mr. Brotherton is represented in modern costume, and in an easy attitude, as if speaking...The statue is of colossal proportions, being ten feet high, and weighing about five tons. The pedestal is of Aberdeen granite...[and] bears inscriptions on three sides: "Joseph Brotherton, Esquire, the first, and for twenty-four successive years (from 1832 to 1857), the faithful, representative of the borough of Salford in the House of Commons"...Though not connected by birth or education with the operative class, Mr. Brotherton had laboured for a considerable portion of his life in their behalf; he had learned to estimate their situation, to sympathise with their feelings, to understand their privations; and he devoted himself as an ardent, practical missionary in their cause. He had endeavoured to shorten the hours of labour; and he had always been most active in the promotion of parks and places of public recreation which would give the working classes the opportunity of turning their leisure to the best account'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Statue of the Late Mr. Joseph Brotherton, erected in Peel Park, Manchester, in 1858. The bronze statue, created by the skilled hand of M. Noble, depicts Mr. Brotherton in modern attire, with an air of approachability and ease, as if in the midst of delivering a passionate speech. The statue stands tall at ten feet high and weighs approximately five tons, with a pedestal of Aberdeen granite. Inscriptions on three sides of the pedestal pay homage to Mr. Brotherton's significant political career. He served as the faithful representative of the borough of Salford in the House of Commons for twenty-four consecutive years, from 1832 to 1857. Despite not sharing a birth or educational background with the working class, Mr. Brotherton dedicated a considerable portion of his life to their welfare. He empathized with their struggles, understood their hardships, and became an ardent advocate for their cause. Mr. Brotherton's efforts extended beyond politics, as he strived to shorten working hours and promote parks and public recreational spaces for the working class. These spaces offered them the opportunity to make the most of their leisure time, contributing to their overall well-being. This statue, a testament to his dedication and impact, stands as a symbol of his enduring legacy in Manchester's history.
