Stanitsa court, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Stanitsa court, 1909. This image is from Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

Stanitsa Court, 1909
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating photograph taken by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev, showcasing a group of Cossacks gathered in front of a court building in Stanitsa, a Cossack settlement in western Siberia during the early 20th century. The image is part of Katanaev's collection of photographs, which was exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The photograph depicts a diverse group of men, dressed in traditional Cossack attire, with a sense of pride and purpose in their direct gaze. Some wear military uniforms adorned with medals, signifying their military service and veteran status. Others are dressed in civilian clothing, reflecting the blend of military and civilian life that characterized the Cossack community. The exterior of the court building, with its ornate wooden architecture, adds to the sense of history and tradition. The men are arranged in a semi-circle, with some seated and others standing, creating a dynamic and engaging composition. The photograph captures a moment in time, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan during the early 1900s. This image is a valuable historical document, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Cossacks and their role in Russian history. Katanaev's photographic work, which includes this image and two other albums, is an important contribution to the visual record of this unique and fascinating community. The photograph is a reminder of the meeting of frontiers, where the Russian empire met the vast expanses of the Siberian wilderness, and the Cossacks played a vital role in settling and defending this territory.
