St Ninian's Cathedral, Perth, 1854. Creator: Unknown
St Ninian's Cathedral, Perth, 1854....this church was appointed to be the Cathedral of the diocese of Dunkeld, St. Andrew, and Dunblane. The edifice is interesting, as being the first built by the Scottish Episoopal Church; and as being, in fact, the only Cathedral used as such in Scotland...The nave and transept are filled with low, open seats, and accommodate about 800 persons...it is hoped that the whole building will soon be finished'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
St Ninian's Cathedral, Perth, 1854: A Glimpse into Scotland's Neo-Gothic Architectural Masterpiece This photograph print, taken in 1854, showcases St Ninian's Cathedral in Perth, Scotland, during its early stages of completion. The church was appointed as the Cathedral of the diocese of Dunkeld, St. Andrew, and Dunblane, marking a significant milestone in Scottish Episcopal Church history. It stands out as the only Cathedral in Scotland used for this purpose. The edifice is an architectural marvel, showcasing the Neo-Gothic and Victorian Gothic styles that were popular during the 19th century. The nave and transept are filled with low, open seats, accommodating approximately 800 persons. The building's exterior exudes an aura of grandeur and spirituality, with its pointed arches, intricate stonework, and tall spires reaching towards the heavens. The Illustrated London News, a prominent 19th-century British newspaper, published this engraving, expressing optimism about the completion of the entire building. The Gothic Revival style, which drew inspiration from the Middle Ages, was in vogue during this period, and St Ninian's Cathedral is a fine example of this architectural movement in Scotland. This monochrome image offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the religious and architectural landscape of Scotland during the Victorian era. The Cathedral remains an enduring symbol of faith and history in Perth and Kinross, attracting visitors from around the world.
