The Spouting Cave, 1872. Creator: W. J. Linton

The Spouting Cave, 1872. The Spouting-Rock on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean at Rhode Island, USA: After a southeasterly storm, the apparatus is in working-order; and, during the " season", multitudes assemble there to see the intermittent fountain play. The construction of the opening beneath is such that, when it is nearly filled and a heavy wave comes rolling in, the pent-up waters can find relief only by discharging themselves through a sort of funnel into the air. It is, however, a somewhat treacherous operator: for a long time there may be no spouting done; and, even when the waves roll in from the right quarter, it is not easy to tell just when the horn intends to blow. If the interesting couple depicted in our sketch remain standing much longer where they are, before they know it the fountain may spout up some forty or fifty feet, and they will go home with drenched clothes and a wet skin. But the ocean-view is, at this spot, so indescribably grand after a storm, that the temptation to linger as near the edge of the rocks as possible is almost irresistible, and we have seen many a gay company pay the watery penalty. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

The Spouting Cave, 1872 - A Treacherous Beauty

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the mesmerizing allure of The Spouting Cave on the coast of Rhode Island, USA. Created by W. J. Linton in 1872, this image transports us to a time when multitudes would gather to witness the intermittent fountain play after a southeasterly storm. The construction of the cave's opening is ingeniously designed so that when it fills up and a powerful wave crashes in, the pent-up waters are forced through a funnel-like structure, shooting high into the air. However, this natural wonder proves to be a treacherous operator as its timing remains unpredictable. Even with waves rolling in from just the right direction, one cannot determine exactly when the horn will blow. In this particular scene depicted within our sketch, an adventurous couple stands perilously close to the edge of these rocky cliffs. Little do they know that if they linger any longer, they may find themselves drenched by a sudden spout reaching heights of forty or fifty feet. Despite its potential risks and watery penalties for those who dare approach too closely, The Spouting Cave offers an indescribably grand ocean-view after each storm. Its magnetic pull has enticed many visitors throughout history to succumb to temptation and pay their respects at water's edge. This remarkable photograph is part of "Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant and showcases not only nature's beauty but also humanity's unwavering fascination with its power and unpredictability.
