Spinner, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Spinner, 1909. This image is from Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
Spinner, 1909" is a captivating print captured by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev. This image is part of the remarkable collection titled "Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home," which offers a glimpse into the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks residing in western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan.
The albums containing these photographs were originally created for display at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition held in Omsk in 1911. They were meticulously assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society.
In this particular photograph taken during his journey to Stepnoi krai (later known as Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk oblasts), N.G. Katanaev beautifully captures a moment from everyday life. The image showcases a woman standing outdoors with her spinning wheel—a traditional craft that has been passed down through generations.
Dressed in full-length attire with an intricately adorned headscarf or headdress, she exudes grace while engaging in her domestic duties. The black-and-white composition adds an air of timelessness to this historic portrait.
This photograph not only serves as a testament to Russia's rich heritage but also provides insight into the lives led by women within these communities. It invites viewers to appreciate their craftsmanship and dedication while offering an opportunity to reflect upon our own connection with tradition amidst modernity.
Preserved within the Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife, "Spinner, 1909" stands as a poignant reminder of cultural preservation through visual storytelling—an enduring tribute to those who have shaped history through their artistry.
