The Sphinx, c. 1853. Creator: John Beasley Greene (American, 1832-1856)

The Sphinx, c. 1853. The son of a wealthy banker, Greene was an American but born and raised in Paris. At a young age, he became an avid archaeologist focusing on the Middle East. Before embarking on his first trip to Egypt in 1853 at age 19, he learned photography so he could accurately document excavations, discoveries, and inscriptions, but he also used the relatively new medium to produce elegant landscapes such as the view of Thebes nearby. Greene, who was involved in excavations of the Great Sphinx, died in Cairo in 1856, possibly of tuberculosis

The Sphinx, c. 1853 - Capturing the Mystique of Ancient Egypt

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases the enigmatic allure of The Sphinx, taken in 1853 by John Beasley Greene. Born and raised in Paris to a wealthy banking family, Greene's passion for archaeology led him on an extraordinary journey to the Middle East at just 19 years old. Equipped with his newly acquired photography skills, Greene embarked on this expedition not only to document excavations and discoveries but also to create stunning landscapes that would forever preserve the essence of these ancient wonders. His dedication is evident in this image, as he skillfully captures the grandeur and mystery surrounding Thebes. Greene's involvement in excavating the Great Sphinx further deepened his connection with Egypt's rich history. Tragically, his life was cut short when he succumbed to illness in Cairo at age 24, possibly due to tuberculosis. This salted paper print from a waxed paper negative now resides within The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection—a testament to both Greene's artistic talent and his invaluable contribution as an early pioneer of archaeological photography. Through this photograph, we are transported back in time—immersing ourselves in the majesty of ancient Egypt while commemorating John Beasley Greene's remarkable legacy as an American artist who dedicated his life to preserving our shared heritage.
