South American textile design, 1951. Creator: Shirley Markham
South American textile design, 1951. Panel of Peruvian (Huacho) cotton woven as double cloth, late Chimu period (before c1470), in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a South American textile design from 1951, created by the talented Shirley Markham. The intricate panel of Peruvian (Huacho) cotton woven as double cloth dates back to the late Chimu period, before c1470. Currently housed in the esteemed Victoria & Albert Museum in London, this piece is a testament to Markham's remarkable skill and creativity. Markham's artistic journey began at Central School of Art in London, where she studied Graphic Design and Illustration from 1950-1952 under renowned tutor Mervyn Peake. Influenced by British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden, her distinctive style emerged. During her time in Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome, Markham immersed herself in sketching classical buildings that further shaped her artistic vision. After graduating from Central School of Art, she embarked on a successful career as a graphic designer producing book illustrations, comics cartoons, menus, and programmes. However promising her career may have been, societal expectations prevailed when she married in 1957. Middle-class women were expected to prioritize family life over professional pursuits during that era. Despite possessing undeniable talent for illustration, Markham lacked the confidence to return to it after marriage. For many years following her decision to step away from artistry professionally, her portfolio remained tucked away in the family attic until now. Today we are privileged to witness Shirley Markham's incredible work published here for the first time—a long-overdue recognition of an artist whose talent deserves admiration and acclaim.
