Sketchbook, page 10: Carter Mountian (?), 1859. Gifford was an American landscape painter belonging to the second generation of Hudson River school artists. Based in New York City with a studio at the Tenth Street Studio Building, Gifford took annual summer trips to the Catskills, the Adirondacks, and other scenic locations in New England. This sketchbook accompanied the artist on his expedition in 1859 to New Hampshire and Maine, where he drew sites such as Dixville Notch, the White Mountains, and Peaks Island, Casco Bay. Gifford used such graphite studies as the basis for oil paintings worked up in his studio, such as A Home in the Wilderness (1866)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from Sanford Robinson Gifford's sketchbook, specifically page 10 featuring Carter Mountain (?), dated back to 1859. Gifford, an esteemed American landscape painter and member of the second generation of Hudson River school artists, left an indelible mark on the art world. Residing in New York City at the renowned Tenth Street Studio Building, he embarked on annual summer expeditions to picturesque locations such as the Catskills, Adirondacks, and New England. During his journey in 1859 to New Hampshire and Maine, Gifford meticulously documented breathtaking sites like Dixville Notch, White Mountains, and Peaks Island in Casco Bay within this very sketchbook. These graphite studies served as inspiration for his later oil paintings created within the comfort of his studio. One notable example is "A Home in the Wilderness" (1866). The bound volume containing these precious sketches has become a treasured artifact that offers us a glimpse into Gifford's creative process and deep connection with nature. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images and now displayed by The Cleveland Museum of Art (not affiliated with any company), this print allows us to appreciate the skillful strokes and intricate details captured by one of America's most celebrated landscape painters.
