Preparatory study for a painting of the coronation of Emperor Napoleon I (1769-1821) which took place on Sunday 2 December 1804 at the cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. Napoleon crowns himself as Josephine kneels before him, hands in a gesture of prayer. Le Sacre de Napoleon by Jacques-Louis David, the official painter of Napoleon, was completed in 1807.
