Sketch for the chapel of Sainte-Suzanne in the church of Saint-Roch in Paris, c.1857. Left: Empress Prisca with the body of St Susanna. Right: Maximus (Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus) steps back at the sight of the Angel which protects Susanna. Susanna was the niece of Pope Caius, who was close to emperor Diocletian. He had given his daughter Valeria in marriage to Maximus, but as she died soon after, he chose to marry Susanna. The young Christian refused his advances and underwent martyrdom. EDITORS COMMENTS
This sketch by Sébastien Louis Guillaume Norblin de la Gourdaine, titled "Sketch for the chapel of Sainte-Suzanne in the church of Saint-Roch in Paris, c.1857," offers a glimpse into the rich history and artistry of the past. The painting depicts two scenes from the legend of Saint Susanna, a young Christian martyr, who was the niece of Pope Caius. On the left, Empress Prisca, dressed in elegant robes, is shown tenderly enshrouding the body of Saint Susanna. The peaceful scene is juxtaposed with the dramatic event on the right, where Maximus, or Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus, recoils in awe at the sight of the protecting Angel. Maximus had previously married Valeria, the daughter of Pope Caius, but she passed away soon after their union. In an attempt to console the grieving Pope, Maximus was then married to Susanna. However, she refused his advances and underwent martyrdom rather than succumbing to his desires. This stunning work of art, created in the mid-19th century, is a testament to the enduring power of religious stories and their influence on art and culture. The painting is an oil on canvas masterpiece, measuring an impressive size, and is a valuable addition to the collections of the Petit Palais museum in Paris. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the story to life, transporting viewers back in time to the grandeur of ancient Rome and the devotion of its people. The painting's rich history and artistic merit make it a must-see for art enthusiasts, historians, and anyone interested in the intersection of religion and art.
