Sir Isaac Newtons house on the corner of Orange and St Martins Streets, London, c1880. English scientist and mathematician Isaac Newtons (1642-1727) discoveries were prolific and exerted a huge influence on science and thought. His theories of gravity and his three laws of motion were outlined in his greatest work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, (1687) and he is credited with discovering differential calculus. He also formulated theories regarding optics and the nature of light that led to him building the first reflecting telescope. Knighted by Queen Anne in 1705, Newton is buried in Westminster Abbey, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic house of Sir Isaac Newton, located on the corner of Orange and St Martins Streets in London, around 1880. Sir Isaac Newton was a renowned English scientist and mathematician whose discoveries left an indelible mark on science and thought. His groundbreaking theories of gravity and motion, outlined in his seminal work "Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica" published in 1687, revolutionized our understanding of the physical world. Additionally, he is credited with discovering differential calculus and formulating theories regarding optics. In this image, we see a snapshot of the residence where Newton resided during his remarkable career. The scene also includes a horse-drawn cart passing by on the street outside his home – a reminder of transportation methods prevalent during that era. Knighted by Queen Anne in 1705 for his contributions to science, Sir Isaac Newton's legacy continues to inspire generations today. He rests eternally at Westminster Abbey in London. This wood engraving from the Oxford Science Archive offers us a glimpse into both the physical space that housed one of history's greatest scientific minds as well as an insight into life during seventeenth-century Britain. It serves as a testament to Newton's profound impact on mathematics, physics, and our understanding of the natural world.
