The Siege of Mooltan (Multan), India, 1849 - A Glimpse into the Turbulent Past

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to a significant moment in history - the Siege of Mooltan (Multan) during the Second Anglo-Sikh War. The artwork by J Rogers vividly captures a scene from this intense battle that raged on for months. In the foreground, we see an awe-inspiring sight - the Houdah of Mulrajs elephant struck by a cannonball. This powerful image symbolizes both the might and vulnerability of war. Amidst chaos and destruction, one cannot help but marvel at the resilience displayed by these majestic creatures. The siege itself was sparked by a revolt against British rule imposed upon Multan's inhabitants. It lasted from April 1848 to January 1849 until finally, surrender came from the last defenders to their British adversaries. This photograph not only showcases elements of warfare but also provides glimpses into daily life during colonial times in India. Men on horseback can be seen navigating through streets lined with buildings, capturing both the beauty and devastation brought about by imperialism. As we delve deeper into this historical snapshot, it becomes evident that this print is more than just an artistic representation; it serves as a reminder of our shared past and highlights how conflicts shape nations and societies. Through its monochrome palette and intricate details, this artwork invites us to reflect upon themes such as power dynamics, resistance, sacrifice, and ultimately reminds us that history is never truly forgotten.
