One of 21 watercolors (out of an original 27) from an album relating to the history of the Siberian Cossacks held by the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow. EDITORS COMMENTS
Siberian Cossacks Exploring New Lands" is a captivating watercolor painting by Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin, showcasing a group of intrepid Siberian Cossacks as they arrive at the shores of an unexplored land in the 19th century. The painting is one of 21 surviving watercolors from an album presented to Tsar Nicholas II in 1891, during his return journey to Saint Petersburg from a trip to the Russian Far East. The album, titled "History of the Siberian Cossacks," was a gift from the Most August Ataman of All Cossack Voiskos (Commander of all Cossack troops) to the future Tsar. The theme of the album revolves around the rich history of the Cossacks east of the Ural Mountains, beginning with the pivotal victory of hetman Ermak Timofeevich over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing through more than three centuries of Russian history. In this painting, the Cossacks are depicted as they disembark from their boats, their horses tethered nearby. The rugged terrain, marked by rocks and a winding river, serves as a stark reminder of the challenging frontier they have crossed. The Cossacks, with their distinctive uniforms and determined expressions, embody the spirit of exploration and conquest that defined their history. Karazin masterfully captures the essence of this moment, as the Cossacks meet the new land, their horses pulling at the reins, and their eyes filled with curiosity and anticipation. The painting is a testament to the rich artistic and historical heritage of Russia and the indomitable spirit of the Siberian Cossacks. This stunning watercolor painting is a valuable addition to the collections of the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow, preserving a piece of Russia's past for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
