EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of London in 1912. The image showcases Savory & Moores Pharmacy, a renowned establishment located at 143 New Bond Street. Stepping into this pharmacy was like stepping into a world of elegance and sophistication. The shop front is beautifully displayed with an array of products, enticing passersby with its offerings. Above the entrance door proudly hangs the royal coat of arms, indicating that Savory & Moores Pharmacy held the prestigious title of being appointed to serve the royal family. This recognition speaks volumes about their commitment to quality and excellence. Established by Thomas Field Savory in 1797, this pharmacy had been serving customers for over a century before closing its doors in 1968. However, thanks to the Wellcome Institute of the History of Medicine's foresight, all fittings and contents were preserved for future generations. In an incredible feat, this piece of history was transported across continents to Melbourne, Australia in 1971. It now stands as part of the Medical History Museum where it has been meticulously reconstructed to reflect its mid-Victorian origins. Not only does it serve as a backdrop for exhibiting various forms of glassware and containers used during that era but also allows visitors to immerse themselves in an authentic Victorian pharmacy experience. This photograph captures not just a moment frozen in time but also tells a story steeped in tradition and innovation within the field of medicine.
