This print captures the essence of Saint John Fisher, an influential figure in English Catholic history. The portrait, created by renowned artist Hans Holbein the Younger in 1748, showcases Fisher's dignified presence and unwavering devotion to his faith. Saint John Fisher was a prominent bishop, cardinal, and martyr who fearlessly opposed King Henry VIII's controversial decision to divorce Catherine of Aragon. His courageous stand against the king ultimately led to his imprisonment in the Tower of London. In May 1535, Fisher faced accusations of treason for refusing to acknowledge Henry as the head of the church. Despite immense pressure and threats to his life, he remained steadfast in his beliefs until his tragic beheading on June 25th that same year.
