Saban. Wooden and Metal Ploughs, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Saban. Wooden and Metal Ploughs, 1909. This image is from Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled "Saban. Wooden and Metal Ploughs, 1909," captures the rural landscape and the daily life of Siberian Cossacks in the early 20th century. Taken by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev during his journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai, this image is part of the "Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home" album. The photograph was created for the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition held in Omsk in 1911. The scene portrayed in the photograph shows a group of Cossacks working in the fields, using both wooden and metal ploughs to till the land. The wooden plough, a traditional tool used for centuries, is pulled by a team of horses, while the metal plough, a more modern innovation, is being operated by a Cossack. The contrast between the two ploughs symbolizes the transition from traditional farming methods to more modern ones, reflecting the changing times. The photograph also showcases the vast, open steppe landscape that characterized the region, with its endless expanse of golden wheat fields stretching towards the horizon. The Cossacks, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, are dwarfed by the vastness of the land they cultivate, underscoring their deep connection to the land and their role as settlers and farmers. This photograph is an invaluable document of the history and culture of the Siberian Cossacks, providing a glimpse into their way of life during a time of great change. It is a poignant reminder of the hard work, resilience, and ingenuity of these early settlers, who played a significant role in the development of the region.
