This print showcases the Rutan Quickie, a remarkable aircraft from the 1970s. Created by Scaled Composites, this single-engine and single-seat plane boasts a distinct stagger wing design with a wingspan of 16ft. 8in. The sleek white body adorned with blue trim exudes elegance and style. In an era when homebuilt aircraft designs were popular but expensive, Tom Jewett and Gene Sheehan sought to revolutionize the industry by creating an airplane that offered "more flying enjoyment for less money". They enlisted the expertise of renowned aviation designer Burt Rutan, known for his exceptional creations like the Rutan VariEze and Voyager (both featured in NASM collection). The collaborative efforts between Jewett, Sheehan, and Rutan resulted in the birth of the first Quickie aircraft. By April 1978, it was meticulously finished, successfully tested in flight, and ready to be introduced to the public. This photograph not only captures a piece of American aviation history but also represents innovation and ingenuity within the aerospace industry during that time. It serves as a testament to how technology can be harnessed to create affordable yet thrilling flying experiences. Displayed at the National Air and Space Museum (NASM), this image stands as a symbol of educational institutions like Smithsonian Institution's scientific dedication towards preserving our rich heritage in air transport. The Rutan Quickie is more than just an object; it embodies America's passion for flight while showcasing Scaled Composites' contribution to industrial advancements in aviation technology.
