Rustams seventh course: He kills the White Div, folio 124... 1522-1537. Creator

Rustams seventh course: He kills the White Div, folio 124 from a Shah-nama (Book of Kings) of Firdausi (Persian, about 934-1020), 1522-1537. In this magnificent, refined work of a painter of the Safavid court in Iran, the warrior hero Rustam completes his last of seven herculean labors that established his prowess as a matchless hero. He engages in a ferocious struggle with the chief of demons, the White Div, in order to collect the potent blood from its liver that will restore sight to the Persian kings blinded eyes. Their battle, which takes place inside a cave, is witnessed by a group of demons who look down from above. Tied to a tree at the side of the cave is a young local ruler who was captured by Rustam to serve as his guide and informer. Rustams horse Rakhsh grazes nearby, untroubled by the bloody violence occurring within. Mir Musavvir is one of the Persian artists who came to India from Iran, along with his son, at the invitation of the exiled Mughal emperor Humayun in the early 1550s. The jewellike landscape and refinement of detail are aspects of royal Persian painting that formed the basis of Mughal painting in India

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of art titled "Rustam's seventh course: He kills the White Div, folio 124" from a Shah-nama (Book of Kings) by Firdausi. Created between 1522-1537, this exquisite work was crafted by a painter at the Safavid court in Iran. The painting depicts Rustam, the legendary warrior hero, undertaking his final and most challenging task. Engaged in an intense battle within a cave, Rustam confronts the formidable chief of demons known as the White Div. His objective is to obtain the potent blood from its liver that can restore sight to the blinded eyes of Persian kings. As their struggle unfolds, a group of demons watches from above, witnessing this epic clash between good and evil. Meanwhile, tied to a tree nearby is a young local ruler who serves as Rustam's guide and informant after being captured by him. Amidst all this chaos and violence lies Rustam's loyal horse Rakhsh grazing peacefully nearby, seemingly undisturbed by the bloody spectacle unfolding before it. Mir Musavvir, one of many talented Persian artists who migrated to India during Emperor Humayun's exile in the early 1550s, created this masterpiece along with his son. The meticulous attention to detail and jewel-like landscape exemplify elements found in royal Persian paintings that later influenced Mughal art in India. This stunning print offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate both historical significance and artistic brilliance encapsulated within this extraordinary artwork.
