EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Royal Hospital in Chelsea, London, dating back to the late 19th century. Established by King Charles II as a haven for war veterans in 1682, this architectural marvel served as a hostel rather than providing pensions, taking inspiration from Les Invalides in Paris. The esteemed residents of this institution are affectionately known as Chelsea pensioners. The photograph showcases the hospital's grand exterior nestled along the picturesque River Thames. Its stunning architecture stands tall against the backdrop of lush gardens and tranquil waters. Boats gently glide past on the river, adding to the serene ambiance of this historic location. Notably, within these hallowed grounds lie the final resting place of Margaret Thatcher and her husband Denis Thatcher. Their ashes were interred at Royal Hospital Chelsea, paying tribute to their significant contributions to British politics. This monochrome image offers a glimpse into an era long gone but not forgotten – a testament to Britain's rich history and enduring legacy. Sir Walter Besant's photographic expertise beautifully captures every intricate detail of this iconic landmark that has withstood centuries of change while remaining an integral part of London's cultural fabric.
