"Robin Hood and the Curtal Friar", from "The Boy's Book of Ballads", 1860. Of the romantic characteristics of John Gilbert's illustrations it is of course unnecessary to say a word, except that we think we see particular marks of care and finish in the details of each picture. We engrave a very spirited specimen of the illustrations, one which pertains to the ballad of "Robin Hood and the Curtal Friar, " and the gist of which is to be found in the following lines: "The friar took Robin Hood on his back, Deep water he did bestride, And spake neither good word nor bad Till he came to the other side. Lightly leap'd Robin off the friar's back; The friar said to him again, "Carry me over the water, fine fellow, Or it shall breed thee pain". Illustration from "The Boy's Book of Ballads. Illustrated with Sixteen Engravings from Drawings" by John Gilbert, (Bell and Daldy). Published in "Illustrated London News", 1860

Robin Hood and the Curtal Friar,
EDITORS COMMENTS
a captivating illustration from W. Thomas's rendition of "The Boy's Book of Ballads," published in 1860, showcases the iconic outlaw Robin Hood in an intriguing encounter with a friar. In this ballad, Robin Hood, known for his generosity and defiance against the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham, is approached by a friar who requests a ride across a deep body of water. Robin obliges, carrying the friar on his back as they make their way across. However, once they reach the other side, the friar demands that Robin carry him back, much to the outlaw's surprise. Robin, ever the clever one, refuses, leading to a witty exchange between the two. This illustration, created by the renowned artist John Gilbert, is a striking example of the meticulous attention to detail and care that defines his work. The image captures the essence of the ballad, with Robin Hood and the friar depicted in vivid detail, their expressions and body language conveying the story's humor and intrigue. The water, with its rippling surface, adds a sense of depth and realism to the scene, further enhancing the overall visual appeal. The illustration, published in "Illustrated London News," is a testament to the enduring appeal of Robin Hood and his tales, which continue to captivate audiences with their themes of adventure, wit, and justice.
