Return of the Pope to Rome - the Procession at the Church of San Giovanni, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Return of the Pope to Rome - the Procession at the Church of San Giovanni, 1850. The Pope...arrived at the Gate of St. John precisely at four, where he was received with repeated salvoes of artillery from several pieces of cannon planted just within the walls...no accidents occurred, although the trees were ready to break with the crowds of boys who had climbed into them to get a view of the scene. The pickpockets, too, with whom Rome now swarms-principally importations from Naples-were busy in the exercise of their vocation...His Holiness, on his arrival at the flight of steps leading to the Lateran, was received by Cardinal Barberini, Arch-priest of the Basilica...who opened the bronze gates of the church at his approach'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, entitled 'Return of the Pope to Rome - the Procession at the Church of San Giovanni' dates back to 1850, and its creator remains unknown. The image captures a significant moment in history as Pope Pius IX, played by Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti, made his triumphant return to Rome after a long exile in Gaeta. The scene unfolds at the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, one of the oldest and most ancient churches in Rome, which serves as the cathedral church and the archbasilica of the Diocese of Rome. The Pope's arrival was met with great anticipation, and the streets were filled with an excited crowd eager to witness the historic event. As the horse-drawn carriage carrying the Pope approached the Gate of St. John, the air was thick with excitement and tension. The gates were guarded by soldiers, and the arrival was marked by the deafening sound of artillery salutes. The trees were straining under the weight of boys who had climbed into them to get a better view, and the pickpockets, a common presence in Rome at the time, were busy at work. Upon his arrival at the steps leading to the Lateran, the Pope was greeted by Cardinal Barberini, the Archpriest of the Basilica, who opened the bronze gates of the church in his honor. The Pope's return marked a significant moment in the history of the Catholic Church and the city of Rome, and this photograph print offers a fascinating glimpse into the past.
