The Relief of Lucknow, 1857 (c1850s)

The Relief of Lucknow, 1857 (c1850s). The siege of Lucknow was one of the major engagements of the uprising against British rule in India which began in 1857. Lucknow itself was besieged by mutineers for 87 days from the outbreak of the mutiny until a column commanded by General Sir Henry Havelock broke through on 25th September 1857. Havelocks force was insufficient to break the siege however, and Lucknow was once again surrounded until finally relieved by another, larger force led by General Sir Colin Campbell on 25th November 1857. Colour plate taken from the book Pictures of English History, George Routledge And Sons, (London, New York, c1850)

The Relief of Lucknow, 1857 - A Historic Moment in the Indian Mutiny

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant event in history - "The Relief of Lucknow, 1857". The image takes us back to the mid-19th century during the uprising against British rule in India. For 87 long and arduous days, Lucknow was besieged by mutineers until General Sir Henry Havelock's column broke through on September 25th, providing much-needed relief. However, Havelock's force alone could not completely break the siege. It wasn't until November 25th that another larger force led by General Sir Colin Campbell arrived to finally liberate Lucknow from its captors. This momentous occasion marked a turning point in the Indian Mutiny. In this color plate taken from George Routledge And Sons' book "Pictures of English History" we see a scene filled with emotion and tension. The buildings stand as witnesses to the turmoil that unfolded within their walls. Amidst it all, men and women dressed in military uniforms or traditional attire display expressions ranging from fear and alarm to relief and comfort. The presence of children adds an additional layer of vulnerability amidst the chaos of warfare. Guns and rifles are held firmly by soldiers ready to defend against any threat while symbolizing imperialistic power. This print serves as a reminder of both the horrors endured during colonial times and the resilience shown by those fighting for freedom. It is a testament to human strength amidst adversity and stands as an important historical document capturing one chapter in India's struggle for independence.
