Rainbow Arch, 1872. Creator: William Ludwell Sheppard
Rainbow Arch, 1872. Rock formation on the James River, Virginia, USA: The stratification here is most rare and strange, describing the arc of a circle, and the contour of the opposing faces on the two sides of the river being so perfectly true that a projecting rock on the one side has, exactly opposite, the recess from which it was apparently torn. Speculation as to the origin of this singular formation must be left to the geologists. The arch rises two hundred feet above the level of the stream, and is known as the Rainbow Arch. The whole scene is lovely. Graceful trees drooping over the clear water, an abandoned furnace, and the ruined piers of a long-swept-away bridge, add very much to the natural picturesqueness of the place. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Rainbow Arch, 1872" by William Ludwell Sheppard takes us back in time to the enchanting rock formation on the James River in Virginia, USA. The image beautifully captures the rare and peculiar stratification of this natural wonder, which describes a perfect arc of a circle. The opposing faces on both sides of the river contour so flawlessly that it seems as if a projecting rock was torn from its exact recess on the other side. Geologists are left to speculate about the origin of this singular formation. Standing tall at an impressive height of two hundred feet above the stream, the Rainbow Arch truly lives up to its name. Surrounding this majestic sight are graceful trees gently drooping over crystal-clear water, creating a serene atmosphere. Adding to its picturesque charm are remnants of human presence - an abandoned furnace and ruined piers from a long-gone bridge. Taken from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant and published in 1872 by D. Appleton and Company, this print is not just a visual delight but also serves as historical documentation capturing nature's beauty during that era. William Ludwell Sheppard's skillful photography transports us back in time while reminding us of nature's awe-inspiring creations that continue to captivate our imaginations today.
