EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of military camaraderie and pride during the mid-19th century, featuring members of The Queen's Westminster Rifle Volunteers in 1862. The image showcases a group of distinguished gentlemen, including Major Russell, Colour-Sergeant Roe, Captains Vacher, Loch, Busby, Worms, Earl Grosvenor, Dr. Buzzard, Lieutenants Trollope and Cross, Cross Jun., Lieut.-Col. Lord Gerald FitzGerald, Major Mayne, Capt. Curtis, and Hon. W. Byng. The Queen's Westminster Rifle Volunteers were formed by the amalgamation of two corps – the original Queen's, raised in Belgravia, and the Westminsters, raised in Old Westminster. The choice of a commanding officer for the Westminsters was a natural one, as the eldest son of the Marquis of Westminster graciously accepted the role. The amalgamation of the Westminsters with the Queen's followed, and with the War Office's permission, the regiment adopted the name of the Queen's (Westminster) Rifle Volunteers. The corps consisted of eighteen companies, boasting excellent brass and drum-and-fife bands and a sizeable cadet corps. On the presentation of the colours of the Old Westminsters at the Horse Guards parade on June 1, 1862, the corps mustered an impressive 1,500 strong. During the review at Wimbledon, the Queen's (Westminster) Rifle Volunteers were the only corps to muster two battalions. This photograph serves as a testament to the dedication, unity, and pride of these volunteers during a time when military training and community spirit were of utmost importance.
