One of 21 watercolors (out of an original 27) from an album relating to the history of the Siberian Cossacks held by the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow. The album was created as a gift for the future Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918, reigned 1895-1917), Most August Ataman of All Cossack Voiskos (Commander of all Cossack troops, a title bestowed by Nicholas I), and presented to him in the summer of 1891 on his return to Saint Petersburg through Siberia from a trip to the Russian Far East. The theme of the album is Cossack history east of the Ural Mountains, beginning with the victory of the Cossack hetman (or ataman) Ermak Timofeevich (died 1585) over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing with subjects from more than three centuries of Russian history

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor print, created by Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin in the 19th century, depicts a pivotal moment in the history of Siberia: the defeat of Pugachev's Rebellion near Troitsk on May 21, 1774. Pugachev, an impostor claiming to be the deceased Peter III, had led a rebellion against the Russian government in 1773-1775, gaining a large following among the discontented peasantry and Cossacks in the southern regions of the Russian Empire. This particular scene shows the final confrontation between the rebels and the loyalist forces under the command of Prince Grigory Potemkin. The defeated rebels, having been cornered near the Troitsk Monastery, are shown surrendering to the advancing Cossacks and Russian soldiers. The chaos and desperation of the moment are palpable in the image, with rebels throwing down their weapons and pleading for mercy. This watercolor is one of 21 in an album of Cossack history east of the Ural Mountains, which was created as a gift for Tsar Nicholas II in 1891 during his journey back to Saint Petersburg from a trip to the Russian Far East. The album, held in the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow, is a testament to the rich history of the Cossacks and their role in the expansion and defense of the Russian Empire. The intricate details and vibrant colors of Karazin's watercolor bring the scene to life, transporting us back to a time of rebellion and triumph in the history of Siberia.
