Professor Tyndall, 1864, (1946). Creator: George Richmond

Professor Tyndall, 1864, (1946). Portrait of Professor John Tyndall (1820-1893), Irish-born physicist and mountaineer. Tyndall was appointed Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Royal Institution, London, in 1854 and became President of British Association for the Advancement of Science in 1874. Some of his most notable work was carried out in the fields of heat radiation and acoustics. A keen mountaineer, he combined the pastime with studies of glacial motion in the Swiss Alps. Towards the end of his life Tyndalls health was poor and he died in 1893 from an accidental overdose of chloral hydrate, an imsomnia cure widely misused in the late 19th century. From " British Mountaineers", by F. S. Smythe. [Collins, London, 1946]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the distinguished figure of Professor John Tyndall, a renowned physicist and mountaineer of the 19th century. Taken in 1864 by George Richmond, this portrait showcases Tyndall's commanding presence and intellectual prowess. With his thick beard and piercing gaze, he exudes an air of wisdom and curiosity. Tyndall's contributions to science were groundbreaking, particularly in the fields of heat radiation and acoustics. As Professor of Natural Philosophy at the Royal Institution in London, he made significant advancements that shaped our understanding of these phenomena. Additionally, his passion for mountaineering led him to study glacial motion in the Swiss Alps while indulging in his love for climbing. Despite his achievements, Tyndall's health declined towards the end of his life. Tragically, he passed away in 1893 due to an accidental overdose of chloral hydrate—an insomnia cure widely misused during that era. This image not only immortalizes a brilliant scientist but also offers a glimpse into Victorian England—a time when scientific exploration was intertwined with adventure and discovery. The photograph serves as a testament to Tyndall's legacy as well as an important piece of social history.
