EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Procession of the League (la Ligue), Paris, 24 May 1590" captures a significant moment in French history during the turbulent times of religious conflict. In this powerful image, we see typical soldiers and civic guards armed with pikes and harquebuses leaving Notre Dame after participating in a procession organized by the Catholic League. Formed by Henry of Guise during the French Wars of Religion, the Catholic League rose up against King Henry III following Guise's assassination in 1588. After a popular uprising forced the king to flee Paris, the League held control over the city while being besieged by both royal forces and those loyal to Henry of Navarre. This engraving by Jan Breughel the Younger provides us with a glimpse into this chaotic period marked by religious persecution and prejudice. The black and white composition adds an air of solemnity to this scene as it highlights not only the military personnel but also ordinary men who were caught up in this civil war fueled by differing religious beliefs. Through this print, we are reminded of how religion can be both a unifying force and a source of division within society. It serves as a testament to France's complex history while shedding light on one particular chapter that shaped its future trajectory.
