Preparing A Sledge During the Winter, 1908, (1909)
Preparing A Sledge During the Winter, 1908, (1909). Inside the Cape Royds Hut: Shackleton (left background), Bertram Armytage Armytage (standing background), Jameson Adams (smoking curved pipe), Frank Wild (working on the sledge) and Joyce (extreme right, foreground). A poster advertising ladies corsets hangs on the wall. Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment frozen in time during the winter of 1908. Inside the Cape Royds Hut, a group of intrepid explorers are diligently preparing a sledge for their upcoming expedition. The legendary Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton can be seen in the left background, his determined gaze fixed on the task at hand. Standing behind him is Bertram Armytage Armytage, an equally resolute figure. In the center of the frame stands Jameson Adams, puffing on his curved pipe with an air of contemplation. Meanwhile, Frank Wild works tirelessly on the sledge itself, ensuring its sturdiness and reliability for their arduous journey ahead. Finally, Joyce completes this tableau as he gazes into the distance from extreme right foreground. Adding an unexpected touch to this scene is a poster advertising ladies corsets hanging prominently on one wall. A reminder that even amidst harsh Antarctic conditions, glimpses of everyday life manage to find their way into these extraordinary circumstances. Ernest Shackleton's expeditions were marked by incredible feats and achievements. During his second expedition from 1907-1909, he set a new record by reaching Farthest South latitude at 88° S - just shy of 97 geographical miles from the South Pole - making it one of history's most significant advances towards this uncharted territory. Shackleton's legacy lives on through this powerful image captured within "The Heart of Antarctic" volume I by E. H Shackleton himself in 1909; showcasing not only his determination but also highlighting humanity's relentless pursuit for exploration and discovery in some of Earth's harshest environments.
