EDITORS COMMENTS
This magnificent portrait depicts King George I of Great Britain (1660-1727), after his accession to the throne in 1714. Painted by Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723) after 1715, this oil on canvas work is a testament to the artist's mastery of the Baroque style. Born as the Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg and Elector of Hanover, George I ascended to the English throne following the death of Queen Anne, who had no surviving heir. As a result, he became the first monarch of the House of Hanover and the first British monarch to be born outside the United Kingdom. The portrait shows George I in regal attire, wearing the Order of the Garter, a symbol of his position as King of Great Britain and Ireland. He gazes directly at the viewer with a confident and resolute expression, reflecting his strong leadership qualities. The richly textured fabric of his robe and the intricate details of the Order of the Garter ribbon add depth and dimension to the painting. The portrait was likely commissioned to establish George I's legitimacy as the new monarch and to promote his image to the British people. It is now housed in the Royal Castle in Warsaw, Poland, as part of its extensive collection of fine art. The portrait's grandeur and historical significance make it a must-see for art lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
