[The subject-matter is now identified as Saint Eustace, not Saint Hubert, although the two saints legends are very similar and are therefore often confused.] The long-announced sale of the rich Gallery of the late King William II. commenced on Monday last, and has excited an unprecedented interest throughout Europe ; and since it has been open for inspection, the Hague has had a succession of visitors from almost every country. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a masterpiece from the late King William II of Holland's esteemed collection, painted by the renowned German artist Albert Dürer in 1502. The subject matter, now identified as Saint Eustace, was a popular theme in Christian art during the 16th century. Saint Eustace, a Roman soldier, underwent a profound conversion experience when he encountered a stag with a crucifix between its antlers while on a hunting trip. Moved by this divine sign, Eustace renounced his pagan beliefs and embraced Christianity, leading to his eventual martyrdom. The print, in beautiful preservation, showcases Eustace in prayer, surrounded by a serene landscape of hills and trees. He is depicted kneeling with his arms outstretched, while a dog and hounds look on. A castle and fortifications can be seen in the background, adding to the sense of grandeur and importance. The image exudes a sense of peace and contemplation, making it a most exquisite addition to any art collection. The long-awaited sale of the King's Gallery commenced in 1850 and drew an unprecedented interest from collectors and enthusiasts throughout Europe and beyond. Many visitors traveled from far and wide to see the Royal treasures, including transatlantic amateurs who made purchases to bring back to New York, Boston, and other parts of the Western hemisphere. This print, valued at 3800 florins, was one of the many prized possessions that were sold during this historic event.
