Petty Officer Evans Binding Up Dr. Atkinsons Hand, 5 July 1911, (1913). Artist

Petty Officer Evans Binding Up Dr. Atkinsons Hand. The marks on Atkinsons face are frost-bites, 5 July 1911, (1913). Edgar Evans (1876-1912) bandaging the frostbite-affected hand of Dr Edward Atkinson (1881-1929). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment during the Terra Nova Expedition of 1910-1913. Petty Officer Edgar Evans, with utmost care and tenderness, is seen binding up the frostbite-affected hand of Dr. Edward Atkinson. The marks on Atkinson's face serve as a stark reminder of the harsh conditions they faced in their quest to reach the South Pole. Led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, this final expedition aimed not only to conquer uncharted territories but also to continue important scientific research in Antarctica. The diverse team included experts in various fields such as geology, zoology, engineering, meteorology, and physics. On January 17th, 1912, Scott and his companions - Dr. Wilson, Captain Oates, Lieutenant Bowers, and Petty Officer Evans - finally reached their long-awaited destination: the geographic South Pole. However, their joy was short-lived when they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey from the pole, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. It would be eight months before their bodies were found along with their diaries. This photograph serves as a powerful testament to both the camaraderie among these brave explorers and the immense challenges they faced in one of history's most treacherous expeditions.
