Paris Fashions for February, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Paris Fashions for February, 1850. Coiffures for dinners and concerts are dazzling to the eye, from the gold-embroidered gauze and gems of which they are composed. Turbans are much worn, and are fastened in the front by an aigrette of diamonds, or a jewelled flower. Jewels are more fashionable than ever: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, are apparently scattered over the dresses, for each bow of ribbon sparkles with a gem. Natural flowers have a decided advantage over artificial ones; and it is in very good taste to place in the hair one of those beautiful camellias, which retain their freshness even in the heat of a ball-room. Bouquets for the hand are made larger than ever: a toilette without a bouquet is hardly complete; and, to give the stamp of real elegance, it should be formed of the rarest flowers which the conservatory can produce. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the fashionable world of Paris in February, 1850, as depicted in this image from the Illustrated London News. The elegant women of the city are seen adorned in the latest trends for dinners and concerts, their coiffures a dazzling sight to behold. Gold-embroidered gauze and gems, turbans fastened with diamonds or jewelled flowers, and natural camellias in their hair, all add to the opulence of the scene. Jewels, particularly diamonds, rubies, and emeralds, were in vogue, adorning the dresses and adding a sparkle to every bow of ribbon. The popularity of turbans was at an all-time high, and natural flowers were preferred over artificial ones, with beautiful camellias placed in the hair and bouquets in hand. The size of bouquets had increased, and a toilette without one was hardly considered complete. The conservatory produced the rarest flowers for these elegant displays. This engraving, from the renowned Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the fashionable world of Paris during the 19th century. The theatre and playhouse were popular locations for these grand displays, and the fashionable set attended dinners and concerts in their finest attire. Ringlets and ringlets were the preferred hairstyle, adding to the overall elegance of the women in this image. The creator of this print remains unknown, but its historical significance and intricate detail make it a valuable addition to any collection of 19th-century fashion and social history.
