Captured by renowned explorer and geographer Ivan Dem'ianovich Bulychev during his expedition to Kamchatka in the 1850s, this image is a testament to the rich heritage of Russian exploration and documentation of Siberia and the Russian Far East. Bulychev's meticulously compiled album, "A journey across eastern Siberia: Part 1, Trip to Kamchatka," is a collection of 64 finely drawn illustrations, most in color, taken from various publications and bound together. The album, housed in the Prints Division of the National Library of Russia, offers a glimpse into the diverse landscapes, towns, and people of the region. In this particular image, we see an elevated view of Paratunka Hot Springs, situated on a plain nestled between mountains. The hot springs, a popular destination for travelers seeking relaxation and rejuvenation, are depicted as a series of small pools surrounded by huts and trees. The image also reveals the meeting of frontiers, where the distant mountains and the expansive plain merge, creating a breathtaking and picturesque scene.
