EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Othman Kahn III, also known as Sultan Selim III, from the series "Portraits of the Emperors of Turkey" by John Young, created between the 18th and 19th centuries. The intricately detailed mezzotint print is hand-coloured with brush and watercolour on ivory wove paper. Born in 1761, Othman Kahn III ascended to the Ottoman throne in 1789, ruling until his assassination in 1807. During his reign, he implemented various reforms to modernize the Ottoman military and administration, earning him the title "Selim the Grim." In this portrait, the sultan is depicted wearing a brown robe adorned with intricate patterns and a circular headdress, typical of Ottoman imperial attire. His beard and mustache are meticulously groomed and styled, adding to the regal appearance of the image. The sultan's apparel and accessories, including his ornate headgear and bejeweled belt, reflect the wealth and power of the Ottoman Empire at the time. The portrait is a testament to the artistic skills of John Young, who expertly captured the essence of the sultan's character and the grandeur of the Ottoman court. The use of mezzotint, a printing technique that involves etching the plate with a rosin rod and then hand-colouring the image, adds depth and texture to the portrait, bringing it to life and making it a valuable piece of heritage art. The portrait is currently housed in the Art Institute of Chicago, a renowned art museum and cultural institution in the United States. It is a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, and a testament to the enduring power of art to preserve and celebrate the past.
