Old Man, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Old Man, 1909. This image is from Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Old Man, 1909" by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the Siberian Cossacks. The image is part of a collection called "Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home," which was exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911.
Taken during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later known as Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk oblasts), this photograph showcases an elderly man seated outdoors. His long white beard and weathered face tell stories of wisdom and experience. With his slavic features accentuated by the black-and-white medium, he exudes a sense of resilience that comes from living amidst challenging terrains.
