Old Cossacks, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Old Cossacks, 1909. This image is from Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

Old Cossacks,
EDITORS COMMENTS
captured by Russian photographer Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev in 1909, presents a captivating group portrait of elderly Cossacks, their weathered faces etched with the marks of time and their unwavering gaze, as they gather outside a log cabin in a Siberian steppe settlement. The image is a testament to the rich heritage and resilience of these frontier dwellers, who lived and served in the territories of present-day Kazakhstan and western Siberia. The photograph is part of a larger collection, "Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma" (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), which was compiled between 1891 and 1918 by the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The series was displayed at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in 1911. The Cossacks in this image are dressed in traditional garb, their tunics and hats reflecting the unique culture and history of their people. The men, some seated and others standing, display a sense of camaraderie and pride, their direct gaze meeting the camera with a quiet confidence. The exterior of the log cabin, with its simple yet sturdy design, adds to the sense of self-sufficiency and resourcefulness that characterized the Cossack way of life. This evocative image, with its timeless quality and powerful sense of history, offers a glimpse into the meeting of frontiers and the enduring spirit of the Old Cossacks in the early 20th century.
