The Not-At-All-At-Home Secretary, 1887. Artist: Edward Linley Sambourne

The Not-At-All-At-Home Secretary, 1887. The Home Secretary on the left is attempting to involve himself in a meeting being held in Trafalgar Square. The meeting was a working-class rally being held in protest at rising numbers of the unemployed. Originally banned, the Home Secretary had then apparently changed his mind and had overruled the decision of the police. Therefore, the police were now involved in a battle with the rallys supporters. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 5, 1887

The Not-At-All-At-Home Secretary, 1887

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print by Edward Linley Sambourne that captures the tense atmosphere of a working-class rally held in Trafalgar Square. The Home Secretary, depicted on the left side of the image, finds himself caught in the midst of this protest against rising unemployment rates. Initially banned, he has now overruled the police's decision and attempted to involve himself in the meeting. The scene unfolds with an intense clash between law enforcement and supporters of the rally. Policemen are seen engaged in battle with rioters as they try to maintain control amidst growing aggression and discontent. This powerful caricature serves as a biting satire on politics and highlights the struggles faced by those affected by unemployment during this period. Sambourne's engraving skillfully portrays not only the chaos but also emphasizes key elements such as occupation, joblessness, extremism, and political unrest prevalent during 19th-century London. The monochrome black-and-white aesthetic adds depth to this historical snapshot while capturing both its intensity and significance. Through his artwork, Sambourne sheds light on societal issues surrounding employment and challenges authority figures who fail to address them effectively. "The Not-At-All-At-Home Secretary" stands as a testament to Sambourne's talent for using visual storytelling to provoke thought and inspire dialogue about pressing matters within society.
