The North-West Passage, 1874. Artist: Joseph Swain

The North-West Passage, 1874. Mr Disraeli, the Conservative Prime Minister, looks thoughtfully into the distance. Charts and maps are spread out around him and at his elbow is the drink of Popularity. Britannia sits at his feet. This relates to the decision by Disraelis government to undertake another attempt to complete the mapping of the Northwest Passage through the archipelago that stretches from the North American mainland towards the North Pole. It was a dangerous enterprise, not just because of the geographical difficulties that would have to be overcome. The weather and the sea ice had also to be contended with. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 5, 1874. Heritage Images features heritage image collections. © The Print Collector / Heritage-Images

EDITORS COMMENTS

In this print titled "The North-West Passage, 1874" we see the renowned Conservative Prime Minister, Mr Disraeli, deep in thought as he gazes into the distance. Surrounding him are charts and maps spread out meticulously, symbolizing his government's decision to undertake a perilous expedition to complete the mapping of the Northwest Passage. The archipelago stretching from North America towards the North Pole posed not only geographical challenges but also treacherous weather conditions and sea ice. As Britannia sits faithfully at his feet, representing national pride and strength, Mr Disraeli contemplates this audacious endeavor. At his elbow rests a glass containing Popularity - an allusion to both public support for his administration and perhaps a much-needed drink to fortify himself for what lies ahead. This intricate engraving by Joseph Swain captures not only the political significance of this moment but also serves as a satirical commentary on British politics in the 19th century. Through monochrome imagery and allegorical figures like Britannia, Swain masterfully depicts the weighty decisions faced by politicians during that era. With its rich historical context and artistic finesse, this print transports us back to a time when statesmen like Mr Disraeli navigated uncharted territories both literally and metaphorically. It stands as a testament to their determination in pushing boundaries despite formidable obstacles – an enduring legacy captured through John Tenniel's collaboration with Joseph Swain in creating this remarkable piece of art.
