EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of the Norman Arch leading to the cloisters at Dryburgh Abbey in Berwick-shire, Scotland. The artist, CM Dixon, skillfully portrays the architectural grandeur and historic significance of this 12th-century structure. Dryburgh Abbey has a tumultuous past, having endured destruction and restoration throughout history. Founded in 1150, it suffered devastating fires caused by English troops in 1322 and Richard II's forces in 1385. However, it managed to flourish during the fifteenth century before meeting its final destruction in 1544. Despite surviving briefly after the Scottish Reformation, it was eventually given to James VI of Scotland by the Earl of Mar. In this photograph, we witness a glimpse into centuries gone by as we admire the intricate details of the archway against a backdrop of lush greenery. The vibrant colors bring life to this historic site while highlighting its religious significance. The image invites us to imagine walking through these ancient steps and experiencing the serenity that once filled these cloisters. It serves as a reminder of Scotland's rich heritage and cultural legacy. CM Dixon's masterful composition transports us back in time while preserving an important piece of Scottish history for generations to come.
