Nimrod Picking Up The Northern Party, c1908, (1909)
Nimrod Picking Up The Northern Party at the Edge of the Drygalski Barrier, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Nimrod Picking Up The Northern Party, c1908" takes us back to the early 20th century and offers a glimpse into the extraordinary adventures of Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton. Shackleton, known for his daring expeditions to the Antarctic, achieved remarkable feats during his second expedition from 1907 to 1909. In this image, we witness the moment when Shackleton's ship, Nimrod, arrives at the edge of the Drygalski Barrier to pick up members of his team known as the Northern Party. These brave individuals had ventured farther south than anyone before them, setting a new record by reaching an astonishing latitude of 88° S. Their achievement brought them within mere miles of conquering the South Pole itself. The photograph not only captures this historic event but also showcases the harsh beauty of Antarctica's icy landscape. The monochrome tones emphasize its cold and desolate nature while highlighting Nimrod majestically sailing through frozen waters. Ernest Shackleton's legacy is one marked by determination and resilience in pursuit of scientific discovery and exploration. Although he was knighted for his achievements during this expedition, tragedy struck later in his career when he lost his life during another ambitious journey. This print serves as a testament to Shackleton's indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries in some of Earth's most inhospitable environments. It stands as a reminder that human curiosity knows no bounds when it comes to unraveling nature's mysteries.
