New road development beside the Old Market Hall, Mexborough, South Yorkshire, 1970. A Morris Minor makes its way up the new road development which bypassed the centre of the town. The houses behind the Old Market Hall were demolished soon after to make way for the new Tescos town centre development. The Market Hall, which bears posters for Gillette and the NUM was acquired by the Weatherspoons chain in 2008 and after substantial investment, was opened as a pub and restaurant in 2009

Capturing the Changing Landscape - A Snapshot of Mexborough's Transformation in 1970
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to a significant moment in Mexborough's history. The year is 1970, and a new road development is taking shape beside the iconic Old Market Hall, located in South Yorkshire. As we observe the scene, a classic Morris Minor gracefully navigates its way up the freshly constructed bypass road that now skirts around the town center. Behind the Old Market Hall stand rows of houses which were soon demolished to make room for an ambitious project - Tesco's town center development. This marked a turning point for Mexborough as it embraced modernization and progress. The Market Hall itself tells its own story through its weathered exterior adorned with posters advertising Gillette and bearing signs of support for NUM (National Union of Mineworkers). In 2008, this historic building found new life when it was acquired by Weatherspoons chain. After undergoing substantial renovations, it emerged as a vibrant pub and restaurant in 2009. This photograph not only captures an era but also symbolizes how towns like Mexborough have evolved over time. It serves as a reminder of both loss and growth – old homes making way for commercial developments while preserving historical landmarks like the Old Market Hall that continue to serve their communities even today.
