New London and Norwich, 1874. Uncas Monument; Norwich; Groton Monument; New London; Under the Elms, Norwich; On the Quinebaug; Tunnel at Norwich, Connecticut, USA. The Uncas Monument was dedicated in 1842 to Uncas:a great sachem [chief] of the Pequots, but he became afterward, by revolt and secession, the most renowned leader of the Mohegans for fifty years, during which period he elevated them in point of influence, and held them, in spite of many wars with other tribes, to peaceful relations with the colonists. The Groton Monument, erected in 1830, was dedicated to the defenders who fell at Fort Griswold during the Battle of Groton Heights on 6 September 1781. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, captured by J. Augustus Bogert in 1874, takes us on a journey through the historical landscapes of New London and Norwich in Connecticut, USA. The image showcases several iconic landmarks that have shaped the region's rich history. At the forefront stands the magnificent Uncas Monument, erected in 1842 to honor Uncas, a revered sachem (chief) of the Pequots. Despite his initial allegiance to their tribe, he later led the Mohegans for half a century with great distinction and influence. This monument symbolizes his remarkable leadership and peaceful relations with colonists amidst numerous tribal conflicts. Adjacent to it rises the Groton Monument, built in 1830 as a tribute to those brave defenders who lost their lives during the Battle of Groton Heights at Fort Griswold on September 6th, 1781. A solemn reminder of sacrifice and valor etched into its stone walls. The photograph also captures other picturesque scenes such as "Under the Elms" in Norwich and an enchanting view along Quinebaug River. Moreover, it provides a glimpse into an intriguing tunnel located within Norwich itself. Journeying back over a century ago through this stunning visual representation from "Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In" we are transported to an era where these monuments stood tall against time's relentless march forward. Through Bogert's lens and skilled artistry, we can appreciate not only these architectural marvels but also gain insight into how they continue to shape local identity even today.
