National Concerts at Her Majesty's Theatre - Herr Neithardt, Kapelmeister of the Berlin Choir, 1850. Creator: Unknown
National Concerts at Her Majesty's Theatre - Herr Neithardt, Kapelmeister of the Berlin Choir, 1850. Neithardt has been distinguished as a composer of some 118 vocal and instrumental works, amongst which his psalms and part-songs are very remarkable. The Choir, so well trained under his careful and artistical superintendence, sing a capella - that is, without any instrumental accompaniment. The conductor simply gives the pitch with the common tuning-fork to the singers, who have their parts in hand, and then begins the most delightful combination of human voices that has ever been heard. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, hailing from the 19th century, depicts Herr Augustus Neithardt, the esteemed Kapelmeister, or choirmaster, of the Berlin Choir, during a national concert at Her Majesty's Theatre in Britain. Neithardt, a prolific composer with an impressive catalog of 118 vocal and instrumental works, is particularly renowned for his psalms and part-songs. In this image, Neithardt stands confidently before his choir, who are seen intently focusing on their music sheets, preparing for a stunning a cappella performance. The absence of instrumental accompaniment heightens the anticipation for the harmonious blend of human voices that was sure to follow. The Choir, under Neithardt's meticulous and artistic direction, was renowned for its exceptional training and exquisite sound. The conductor would merely provide the pitch using a common tuning-fork, and the singers, each holding their parts in hand, would begin their harmonious combination. The Illustrated London News, in an article from 1850, described this unique experience as 'the most delightful combination of human voices that has ever been heard.' This evocative engraving, with its rich historical context, offers a glimpse into the world of 19th-century music and the remarkable talents of Augustus Neithardt and his Berlin Choir.
