The Music Room, Kenwood House, Hampstead Heath, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham

The Music Room, Kenwood House, Hampstead Heath, c1950. Kenwood House in north London was remodelled by Robert Adam from 1764-1779. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Music Room" at Kenwood House, located in the idyllic surroundings of Hampstead Heath, London. The image was captured around 1950 by talented artist and illustrator Shirley Markham. Kenwood House underwent a remarkable transformation under the skilled hands of architect Robert Adam between 1764 and 1779. Its grandeur is beautifully depicted in this artwork, which highlights Markham's exceptional eye for detail and composition. Markham's artistic journey began at Central School of Art in London from 1950 to 1952, where she studied Graphic Design and Illustration. Notably, one of her tutors was Mervyn Peake, a renowned writer, artist, poet, and illustrator. Influenced by esteemed British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden; Markham developed her own unique style. During her time as an artist-in-training, Markham explored the Dolomite Mountains in Italy as well as Rome itself. These experiences inspired her to sketch classical buildings that added depth to her artistic repertoire. Despite showing immense promise in her career as a graphic designer with notable contributions such as book illustrations, cartoons for comics menus, and programmes; Markham made the difficult decision to give up on it after getting married in 1957. At that time societal expectations dictated that middle-class women focus their energies on raising children and managing household affairs. For many years following this hiatus from illustration work due to lack of confidence; Markham's portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic until now when it is finally being published for all art enthusiasts to appreciate its brilliance once again.
