Mr. J.B. Gough - from a daguerreotype by Mayall, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Mr. J.B. Gough - from a daguerreotype by Mayall, 1854. Portrait of American temperance orator John Bartholomew Gough. He is a spare, thin man, with premature age stamped upon his face, with a stature by no means imposing. Dressed in ordinary black, you would take him for a very ordinary man, and the first few sentences that fall from his lips strike you as little better than commonplace. Wait awhile, and the orator will warm; the mass before him will respond, and it will beat as with one pulse, while he convulses it with laughter, or melts it into tears. The effect is striking. The scoffer is touched; the drunkard is reclaimed; the most degraded feels that there is yet hope and happiness, and heaven for him...To save the drunkard - to stop the ravages of intemperance - to build up a barrier between the intoxicating cup and the unpolluted lip...such is the work of Mr. Gough'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
[Caption] This photograph, taken by the renowned English photographer Frederick Scott Archer Mayall in 1854, captures the enigmatic presence of American temperance orator John Bartholomew Gough. The image presents a striking contrast between the ordinary appearance of the man and the extraordinary impact he had on his audience. Gough is depicted as a spare, thin man with an aged visage, and a stature that does not immediately command attention. His attire is simple and unassuming, and at first glance, he appears to be an ordinary man. However, as the description from the "Illustrated London News" of 1854 eloquently attests, Gough was anything but ordinary. The orator's true power was revealed as he spoke, and his words resonated with his audience, uniting them with a shared pulse. The skeptic was touched, the drunkard was reclaimed, and even the most degraded felt a renewed sense of hope and happiness. Gough's mission was clear: to save the drunkard, to halt the destructive path of intemperance, and to erect a barrier between the intoxicating cup and the unpolluted lip. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of the spoken word and the indelible mark that Gough left on the world. His legacy continues to inspire and challenge us to confront the complexities of addiction and the human condition. This hauntingly beautiful daguerreotype, a testament to the past, invites us to reflect on the enduring impact of one man's unwavering commitment to change.
