The movers and seconders of the addresses in both Houses of Parliament: the Marquis of Sligo, 1864. Engraving from a photograph by John and Charles Watkins. 'The Most Hon. George John Browne, Marquis of Sligo, Earl of Altamont, Viscount Westport, and Baron Monteagle, in the Peerage of Ireland, and Baron Monteagle of Westport, in the county of Mayo...has been twice married - first, to Ellen Sydney, daughter of the sixth Viscount Strangford; and, secondly, to Julia Catherine Anne, daughter of Anthony Nugent, Esq., of Pallas, in the county of Galway, heir presumptive to the earldom of Westmeath; but both ladies are deceased. His Lordship has always been a consistent Liberal, and votes for the abolition of church rates. Although a regular attendant at the sittings of the House of Peers, the Marquis has hitherto not taken any active part in their Lordships' debates, and his moving the Address in answer to the Speech from the Throne this Session may, in a manner, be taken to be his maiden speech'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the movers and seconders of the addresses in both Houses of Parliament, specifically showcasing the Marquis of Sligo in 1864. The engraving from a photograph by John and Charles Watkins beautifully portrays the distinguished figure of 'The Most Hon. George John Browne, Marquis of Sligo'.
Described as a man of noble lineage with titles such as Earl of Altamont, Viscount Westport, and Baron Monteagle, the Marquis was known for his two marriages to prominent women who have since passed away. Despite personal tragedy, he remained a consistent Liberal in his political beliefs and advocated for causes such as the abolition of church rates.
Although he had been a regular attendee at House of Peers sessions, it wasn't until this particular session that he made his mark by moving the Address in response to the Speech from the Throne - essentially making it his maiden speech. This momentous occasion is captured in this timeless image that showcases not only his physical presence but also hints at his potential impact on parliamentary debates to come.
