The Motor-Car in Soft Snow, after the return of the Ship, c1908, (1909)

The Motor-Car in Soft Snow, after the return of the Ship, c1908, (1909). Specially adapted car which was used to establish two supply depots. Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the incredible feat of exploration by Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton during his second Antarctic expedition. The image showcases a specially adapted motor car in soft snow, after the return of the ship in 1908. Shackleton and his team used this innovative vehicle to establish two crucial supply depots, pushing the boundaries of exploration further than ever before. Ernest Shackleton was a remarkable figure who made significant contributions to Antarctic exploration. During this particular expedition, he and three companions achieved an unprecedented record: reaching the Farthest South latitude at 88° S, just 97 geographical miles away from the elusive South Pole. This remarkable achievement remains one of the largest advancements towards reaching the pole in history. In addition to their groundbreaking accomplishments, members of Shackleton's team also conquered Mount Erebus, an active volcano within Antarctica's icy landscape. These extraordinary achievements led King Edward VII to knight Ernest Shackleton for his outstanding contributions to science and discovery. Tragically, Shackleton met his untimely demise during his third oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition at only 47 years old. However, his legacy lives on through photographs like this one that capture both the harsh beauty of Antarctica's landscapes and the indomitable spirit of human exploration. This historic illustration is taken from "The Heart of Antarctic". Volume I by E. H. Shackleton himself - a testament to not only his daring adventures but also his ability as an author and storyteller.
