The moth Acontia luctuosa and orchid pollen, 1862

The moth Acontia luctuosa and orchid pollen, 1862. This shows seven pairs of pollinia of Orchis pyramidalis on the moths proboscis. The pollen would have become attached when the insect fed on the flowers nectar. When the next Orchis pyramidalis was visited the pollen would be left in a flower, thus cross-fertilizing it. From The Contrivances by which Orchids are Fertilized by Insects by Charles Darwin. (London, 1862)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "The Moth Acontia luctuosa and Orchid Pollen, 1862" offers a glimpse into the intricate world of nature's fertility. Taken from Charles Darwin's groundbreaking book "The Contrivances by which Orchids are Fertilized by Insects" this image showcases the symbiotic relationship between an insect and a flower. In this remarkable capture, we witness seven pairs of pollinia from the Orchis pyramidalis attached to the proboscis of the moth Acontia luctuosa. The pollen was acquired as the moth fed on the nectar of these orchid flowers. As it moved on to another Orchis pyramidalis, it unknowingly transferred this precious pollen onto its stigma, thus enabling cross-fertilization. Charles Darwin, renowned naturalist and pioneer in evolutionary theory during the 19th century, meticulously documented such interactions between organisms in his quest to understand life's complexities. This photograph serves as a testament to his scientific curiosity and dedication. Transporting us back in time to Victorian-era science laboratories at Oxford University or perhaps Darwin's own study room, this print evokes a sense of awe for both nature's ingenuity and human intellect. It reminds us that even amidst controversy surrounding theories like evolution, there were individuals like Darwin who fearlessly pursued knowledge about our world. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece today, let us appreciate not only its aesthetic beauty but also its historical
